Hand-Building I
Hand-Building I
Six weekly classes held on Mondays at 7 – 9pm
WHAT WILL THIS CLASS COVER?
This class will introduce the basic hand-building techniques used to build functional pottery forms.
Hand-building is an ancient pottery technique. It involves creating forms with the most primal of tools – your hands. By using hands, fingers, and simple tools to pinch, coil and slab clay you build a form that is organic, personal and unique.
No previous experience in clay is needed for this class. At the end of this class, you will have created several forms including a vase, mug and detailed 3D art tile.
CLASS BREAKDOWN:
Session 1: Pinch pots and slab mugs
Sessions 2: Coil building and underglaze surface decoration
Session 3: Vases, glazing, discussion of a personal project
Session 4: Carving and slip inlay, the start of personal project
Sessions 5-6: Personal project/open topic
During all sessions, participants will be welcome to ask questions and learn as a class about the demands of each person’s project. Participants will also consult with the teachers on effective ways to build on what they have already learned to problem-solve the hand-build process.
